The Sustainable Tourism Community’s horizontal project, in which Adriatic Ionian Euroregion is partner, has been renewed until 2022. After three years of BleuTourMed project, a new project has been submitted and approved by the Interreg Med Programme.

This renewed project, simply named Sustainable Tourism, will be implemented until 2022. It is a second generation of the capitalization strategy of the Interreg Med and MED Sustainable Tourism Community. The new project will dedicate this new mandate to promote the transferring of results and policies developed by the MED modular projects on sustainable tourism through mainstreaming and strategic liaising series of activities at transnational level.

The new partnership is composed by Diputació de Barcelona (Spain) as lead partner, Latin Arc (Spain), UNIMED – Mediterranean Universities Union (Italy), University of Thessaly (Greece), NECSTouR – Network of European Regions for a Sustainable and Competitive Tourism (Belgium), Adriatic Ionian Euroregion (Croatia), RDA Green Karst – Regional Development Agency Green Karst Ltd. (Slovenia)

The tourism sector is amongst the highest income generators in the Mediterranean. Leisure related activities make tourism a leading economic sector in terms of gross value added and employment. Tourism contributes directly to regional economies with sectoral synergies and strong multiplying effects. It is becoming an increasingly fundamental factor for local development and an expanding dimension of research and cooperation of EU and international programming.

The Adriatic Ionian Euroregion has a strong interest on the topic of the Tourism in its geographical area of competence. The purpose is to promote sustainable tourism practices among its members, involving them in the project activities and promoting synergies with Mediterranean actors. The efforts will be devoted to favour knowledge exchange and policy dialogue on the topic among AIE members and Mediterranean stakeholders.
